Veterans Carer Support

Working with carers in Angus of veterans to deliver early intervention and prevention
support that breaks down barriers and reduces isolation

Veterans Carer Support delivers one-to-one support and peer support groups for unpaid carers who look after wounded, injured or sick serving personnel and veterans. The service is person-centre and non-clinical, delivered to people within the Angus area.

Aiming to break down barriers and meet the needs of carers and the veterans they support, Veterans Carer Support acts as an advocate for individual carers – encouraging them to advocate for themselves while emphasising the importance of self-care.

Veterans Carer Support helps people aged 18 and over, including all former and retired members of the UK armed forces who are carers for this group.

Many carers often struggle with isolation, depression and anxiety, with veterans likely to experience these conditions along with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The service will help to develop skills, confidence and coping strategies, together with an understanding of their loved one’s mental illness.

After receiving initial one-to-one support, people evolve to peer support where they can meet others who relate to their situation and understand the demanding of having caring responsibilities.

Peer support groups are co-designed by people using the service, revolving around the carer’s emotional and practical challenges. These groups will encourage participants to build relationships with their community while recognising other support that can help them locally and nationally.

We are delighted to have this service funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund.

“Supporting people who care for veterans is an acknowledgement of the contribution of veterans and their carers to the greater community. As a charity, we recognise this and seek to provide carers with tailored support to reduce life’s stressors and make their lives more rewarding.”
